I have always been fascinated by the age of sail and making boat models has been one expression of that interest. There is a clear distinction between static modelsĀ  (which are usually immaculate} and those that are intended to be immersed in water and sailed. My interest is in the latter. Among my models are a 1776 American frigate, an 1823 French Navy tops schooner and an 1805 French cutter. There is also a working steam model of the iconic African Queen. They are all built of local wood from scratch, mostly plank-on-frame. Just as they would have been built originally. The aim has been, firstly, to make them look realistic and , secondly, to devise ways to make them sail realistically.
NB Constructed over many years, the models are not for sale.
