Repeat patterns printed on washi (Japanese paper) have featured in my art making the last couple of years. In 2023 an interest in recycling materials, and a foray into slow stitching has tilted my work in a new direction. I have started to stitch with cotton thread on to some of the printed works on paper. The thread weaving in and out of the paper alters its texture, seeming to push it a little closer to a woven fabric.
I like to work intuitively, layering and combining shapes, textures and colours to build up an image. It’s the serendipitous outcomes in the creative process that I am interested in. I am trying not to judge or direct too much, but instead to follow an instinct for what might come next.
